Russian Books for Kids

Every Karawojo book on this page is bilingual: Russian and English appear together, so a child can meet the language alongside the one they already read, and an adult who speaks only one of the two can still read the whole book aloud.

There are two quite different kinds of book here — alphabet and activity books for ages 3–5, and the illustrated Birchwood Tales storybooks for ages 3–8.

How the bilingual format works

In the alphabet and activity books, Russian leads. The Cyrillic letter is the large line a child traces and the Russian picture-word sits with it; the English appears smaller alongside. A book called Russian Alphabet for Kids should read Russian-first, so it does — the English is there to support the adult and the child, not to take the page.

In the Birchwood Tales storybooks, the whole story appears in both languages on every page, in full — not a word-for-word gloss, but a proper read-aloud retelling in each language. One parent can read it in English and a grandparent in Russian, from the same open book.

Кадрия выросла в России среди маминых работ: Баба Зи рисует всю свою жизнь, и краски, кисти и незаконченные наброски были обычной частью детства. Джо — американец, говорит по-испански и после университета много путешествовал, в том числе подолгу жил в Колумбии. Их мальчишки растут там, где рядом звучат английский, русский и испанский, — и во многом вдохновляют то, что мы делаем.
